This brief newsletter's purpose is to remind you of a few important things about this time of year.
Just like last year, this section is our plug to be proactive about your child's asthma and allergies. By treating asthma and allergies sooner, you give them the best shot at feeling, playing, and doing better. If your child has an asthma and allergy plan that has directions for the spring, start it! Like most medical issues, staying ahead of asthma and allergies gives your kids the best shot at feeling well; trying to play "catch up" is always harder.
So, for your child with allergies and/or asthma, if you don't have a good plan for it, or if last year's plan didn't seem to work well enough, call us for an evaluation. For our kids with asthma that take any kind of preventive medications, we recommend having 2 appointments per year, 1 at a regular checkup and one 3-6 months from that appointment. If your child uses a rescue inhaler and seems to need a lot of refills for that inhaler, it's time to make an appointment to see how we can better treat his or her asthma.
Camp and college forms, summer checkups
Since it's the time of year for camp and college forms, please send your forms in ASAP. We require 1 week to complete your forms, given the high volume at this time of year. College forms often have a medical portion that needs completion, one that sometimes necessitates a more current checkup or even blood testing or additional vaccinations. Further, any student with aspirations to play a NCAA sport will need a more current, and more thorough, pre-participation physical, with yet further documentation for special medications (e.g. Ritalin or other ADHD medications). So...please send those forms as soon as you can.
RE: summer checkup appointments, now is the time to book them. Some families have taken advantage of our ability to book a year in advance and have already secured appointments. Because many families want summer appointments, calling ASAP gives you the best chance of getting an appointment that best suits you. So why wait?
Our patient portal has been a great success. Families registered for it have found that non-urgent questions, non-illness-type appointments, and refills are much easier to arrange by sending us portal messages. Please send us a request to register at firstname.lastname@example.org (the best way) or call us for help getting started.
Coming soon - our practice's partnership with Children's Hospital has allowed us to step up our care of simple fractures and issues that might have otherwise required an orthopedist. Keep an eye out for a future newsletter describing this process.
Please feel free to forward this email; we look forward to getting all of our families connected to our email list.
Thanks again for choosing us as your medical home.
